Wow ... The Wall is Wonderful!

It was a perfect weather weekend. Wesley and Meatball, in the company of over 60 children over 3 days created a joyful masterpiece.

You can view a photo gallery of the weekend's pictures at www.east.scs.k12.nc.us - and if you have some pictures to add, let me know!

We are so grateful to everyone, East teachers, kids from all over the county who were "drawn" to the wall! The energy was terrific.

Here are some of the things that kids said about their experience:

Antwan Bennett: "It changed my heart"
DaShada Wall: "After I painted, I wanted to change the world. I went home and cleaned up the area around my house."
Niya Jackson: "It made me happy inside".

Mural Weekend is Here

Wesley is off work today, and will be spray painting the school bus on the wall! Color swatching will also happen today.

Tomorrow morning the street will be barricaded. Volunteer painters should park in bowling alley parking lot and walk to the barricaded area of the street. Check in at the "paint table" - sign in, and get a brush and a container of paint. Save the lower areas of the mural for the littler ones - try to work just at your height - let the high schoolers and adults work the ladders. Remember to watch where youre going because Saturday morning will be Very Busy with many painters!

Work slowly and carefully. Remember that you are painting something that will be there for years to come!

Mural Outlining Has Begun!

Wesley found a slender window of time this past weekend when the winds were calm enough to work with spray paint to begin the outlining of the mural. As weather permits, he'll continue on this work through the week.

Color swatching is planned for Friday afternoon, and the color painting by volunteers will begin and go through the weekend. What Fun! A flyer of information and how to sign up for painting times is being distributed to students who may want to help paint this weekend.

Great Meeting at AHS with Wesley Harris

Tuesday Wesley Harris, the lead artist for the Mural Project, met with students at Albemarle High School.

The students and their art teacher, Mrs. Fike, arranged multiple sketches drawn by the students at East Albemarle and brainstormed ideas to collage the submissions.

Ling Guo had an excellent idea for a student with an unzipped backpack at the far end of the wall, with papers fluttering out behind. On those papers would be the actual sketches, messages, ideas, and concepts that have been talked about by the students and the parents.

Tentatively, the sketch may be finished Friday, and can be shown to those who need to approve. Once that is done, Wesley can outline the sketch on the wall - hopefully this weekend!

Stay tuned for sketch and schedule information - as soon as approval is secured things will really start happening.

The Honors Art Club at AHS will also prepare the areas around the wall on Friday by mowing, cleaning, and getting it safe for people to work!

Thanks again to SNAP for sending Marina Richardson to cover our meeting.

Last evening, Brent King (King's Mobile Wash) of Troy came out and pressure washed the wall... now the graffiti is virtually gone!

And tomorrow morning, Sherrill Smith, owner of S&D Painting, and his crew will be out bright and early to prime the mural space. Thank you Jason of Sherwin Williams for the primer supply!

Kids at East are busy committing their ideas to pictures and words for the lead artists to turn into life-size images in the new few weeks.

Thanks to everyone for making this tiny thought in the mind of a child become something truly exciting.

Sketch Session 9/20, 4-6pm

We are in need of volunteers to sketch for the mural. We have a number of ideas that are fantastic, and need your help to bring them to life! We will supply refreshments and supplies; bring your friends that like to draw and let's get going!

Marisa from SNAP (Stanly News and Press) will also stop in - they are planning to do a story on the mural project.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Pressure Washing Next Wednesday

The wall will be pressure washed this coming Wednesday evening thanks to the donated services of Brent King Pressure Washing out of Troy. Heads up - the street will be block for a brief time that evening until the washing is complete.

Thanks so much Brent!!

Sherwin WIlliams of Albemarle Supports Mural Project

We met Jason & Charles at Sherwin Williams Paint Store to tell them about the Mural Project. We're so glad to have their support, and to learn about an anti-graffiti product that can be applied to the mural upon completion - it allows the mural to be pressure washed, taking off any unwanted graffiti, while preserving the mural! They'll be helping us with some paint donations too.

Thanks Jason and Charles, and for the leads you provided us today --

Local Artists Support Mural

Our locally renowned "public artists" Johnathan ("Meatball") Brooks, and Wesley Harris plan to attend the mural meeting this coming Tuesday. You may have seen their work around the community - the "Fat Albert" Wall, on Lincoln Street, or the Jimer Stokes memorial painting on Lincoln Street.

We're really excited to have their interest and involvement!

Oh SNAP!

Stanly News & Press was contacted on Friday, September 10th to invite them to our Mural Meeting. I spoke with Tiffany Thompson, who has done some articles on East Albemarle in the past. She will feed this information to the reporter currently covering this beat. We are excited to let the city know of the great things coming out of East Albemarle and its community!

The Word Is Out

On Wednesday we delivered Mural Meeting postcards to all homes in Amhurst Gardens, and the houses on S. Bell and the surrounding block of Amhurst. The Word Is Out!

Learned of another "street painting" on Lincoln and went to see the Jimer Stokes tribute painting. What a fantastic work.

On Monday we will visit local paint stores to see about donations of supplies. Stay tuned.!!

Mural Project Updates

We've been by all of S. Bell now, and gotten WONDERFUL ideas! The top of Inger street we visited this past Wednesday, and the excitement is growing. We've gotten names of local artists (disguised as "regular" working people!) and visited a nearby mural (The "Fat Albert" Wall on Lincoln Street). Next week we'll visit on Grigg and Amhurst Streets.

The first official Mural Meeting will be on Tuesday, September 14th, at 6pm in the Media Center of East Albemarle Elementary School. We hope you will come hear about the ideas, (and give some too) -- and get templates for drawing!

The wall prep has been secured, too. It will be pressure washed in late September.

Next week we'll also seek out suppliers for paints and brushes.

Taking it to the Streets

Yesterday Alissa Ess, School Social Worker and I began going down South Bell Avenue to do the first community survey about the mural project. It took two hours to go down just one side! We met and talked with the littlest and the oldest and everyone in between. We distributed flyers.

Reactions ranged from wonder to amazement to excitement. Got some great ideas ... "something that makes the kids happy..." "... something that reminds them to keep up their hopes - and that they belong in school ..." "... bumblebees..." "... school buses... with their faces looking out the window - to remind them they belong in school!..."

We're working our way through the neighborhood. If we haven't been to your house, we'll get there soon, if you're on S. Bell, Inger, Grigg, or Amhurst - and hopefully you can spread the word from there!

The Community Mural Project - Is Born!

I am excited to announce that a tiny idea born in Mrs. Bunting's 1st grade class last winter has sprouted!

While learning about how kids can be good community citizens, students viewed an image of children painting a fence where graffiti had been. Several students talked about the graffiti on the retaining wall on S. Bell Avenue, and how riding by it day and day out on the school bus really got them down. (I wonder what it really does to all our inner attitudes to ride by profanity every day of our lives?)

Since that day, we have been able to propose the idea of not only cleaning this wall - but creating a mural that would be something uplifting to everyone in the neighborhood! Stanly County Board of Education has obtained permission to organize this project.

In August, staff from East Albemarle will be in the area to get residents' ideas about themes for the mural.

In September, a meeting will be held to inform the neighborhood of the ideas proposed, and to give information on how to submit drawings and ideas.

Art Teachers from the city schools will assist in rendering these submissions for approval, and by October the painting can begin. Elementary, Middle and High School students are encouraged to submit ideas and drawings - as well as adults!

If you'd like to follow the progress of this project, "subscribe" to this blog - and check the school website - or contact Maria Stine, East Albemarle School Counselor, at 704-982-5113.

Community Partners are needed for obtaining paint, supplies, and wall preparation services.

Good Citizenship...

The harsh grip of winter has loosened... the frozen ground given way to gooey mud. Gotta love it!

Students at East are enjoyed some interesting Guidance lessons:

How Does Your Engine Run?

This program helps kids to become aware of their inner "engine" and to be able to know when they are "hyper" or "just right" or "low energy". They have been introduced to various ways to change their "engine speed" - such as yoga positions, using straws for breathing exercise (or just to chew on!), squeezing Playdo, rubbing smooth ribbons between their fingers, or even popping bubble wrap!

All of these are sensory methods that help kids cope with focus problems, anger problems, or just worries. Through the use of "ordinary" objects, kids can distract (0r focus) themselves to get to a better state of mind.

We are learning to "draw" on memories that we recall when hearing different kinds of music and sound effects. Through this exercise we get to understand how music, television, movies, games, even people can affect our moods. Negative music and other media will make us less creative, use less color in our pictures... while the opposite happens when listening to music that is upbeat, cheerful, or humorous.

What is on at your house? How does it creep into the attitudes of the people in the house? Are you a fan of "Survivor" type shows? These emphasize exclusion, manipulation, gossip and other hurtful actions. What do the kids in the house learn from these shows? How to step on others to "win".

We are also learning about non-verbal communication. Aggressive communication is what we do when we are wanting to make another person feel isolated or made fun of (such as eye rolling, sticking out our tongue, crossing of the arms or turning our back to someone, or even telling a secret in front of a third person.)

This is the type of communication most often associated with bullying and relational aggression.

Assertive communication is the body language that is non-threatening (like good posture, positive eye contact). This is the communication we show when we are paying attention to someone in a respectful way.

Non-assertive communication looks like someone who is trying to "fade" into the background. Slumping, head down, lack of eye contact can tell someone that there is a lack of confidence.

Students are learning how to understand the "body language" that they are communicating, and how to interpret the nonverbal messages others send. This will help them prevent and solve many friendship problems.

Perseverance...

Our character trail for January is Perseverance... otherwise known as determination... grit... not giving up.

These awful cold days at the beginning of this month gave me lots of practice at perseverance... breaking ice night & day on the water troughs for the horses.. unscrewing hoses and draining them so pipes wouldn't freeze... getting enough clothes on to feed every morning at 530am before coming to school...

The month of January is like a Wednesday... you're halfway through... dreaming of the weekend... and extra time in bed. But we've got a lot to do to be ready for May. Teachers and assistants are working double time to help kids learn everything they are going to need for their tests. So kids... parents... keep up your routines. Don't let up!

In January, Guidance Connect is concentrating on:

Grades 4 & 5:

How to change one's reputation: step by step guide to self-improvement and self-awareness
Dealing with Peer Pressure

Grade 3

Stop Bullying Now! websides and teaching games to handle different kinds of bullying.
When Friends Bully

Grades K-2

Tattling: What is the difference between tattling and telling to get help?
